International online shopping: a practical checklist

Educational article · Updated October 2026

Shopping from a foreign online store expands choice, but the advertised price may not be your final cost. Delivery destinations, consumer rules, payment arrangements and taxes vary by market and by retailer.

Confirm delivery availability first

Before comparing prices, make sure the exact item can be shipped to your country. Not every seller on a marketplace serves every destination, and some product categories are restricted.

Estimate landed cost

Review the item price plus postage, taxes, import duties, handling fees and any other required charges. Whether fees are collected at checkout or delivery can change both the total and the buyer's experience.

Understand payment conversion

If the store bills in a different currency, the bank or payment network may apply a conversion rate and fees. A website's approximate currency display is not a guaranteed card charge. For international buyers, it can help to compare the total in both the store currency and the home currency.

Check product compatibility

Electrical voltage, plugs, supported mobile bands, software localization and regional product restrictions matter. A lower price abroad offers no advantage if the item is unsuitable for local use.

Review return logistics

Find out whether returns require shipping internationally and who pays for that shipping. Check the deadline, packaging requirements and the seller responsible for support.

Protect your payment

Confirm that the site and checkout domain are legitimate. Avoid sending payment details through messages or unverified off-platform channels. Retain confirmation emails and order records.

One final check

Pause before buying and ask: Is this the exact item I need? Can it reach my address? What is the full delivered cost? Who handles problems? Only after those questions are answered does it make sense to judge the discount.
